(KNZA)--More than 2 ½ tons of unused medications were collected during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day held last month.

Local law enforcement officials collected well over 5-thousand-pounds of drugs at seventy locations across the state, including the Brown County Sheriff's Department(Play Audio)

That's Sheriff John Merchant who says the Brown County Law Enforcement Center is one of many law enforcement agencies in Kansas where such drugs can be taken, for safe disposal, year round(Play Audio)

The medications are safely collected and destroyed, keeping them out of the wrong hands while making sure they are disposed of in an environmentally friendly fashion.

Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt says this latest semi-annual Take Back Day saw the second-highest amount of drugs collected statewide since the program began in 2010.
