Nebraska Schools Show Improvement in Latest Report
11/21/2012

(KTNC) - The Nebraska Department of Education unveiled the annual report on the state’s public schools Tuesday.
The report shows that Nebraska schools are making progress on statewide math and reading tests.  More than 74-percent of students were at or above proficiency levels in reading this year, compared with less than 72-percent in 2011.
More than 67-percent showed proficiency in math, compared to less than 63-percent last year.
Education Commissioner Roger Breed comments.  (play audio  :16   “math test.”)
This year’s results were the first ever under the new Nebraska Performance Accountability System.
The new system measures schools by their average scores in reading, math, writing, and science.  The exam also shows improvement by measuring differences in math and reading scores among students in the same grade, and growth by comparing scores of the same students from year to year.
The results also show that nearly three of every four public school districts in the state – 72.3-percent – graduated 90-percent or more of their high school seniors.
