$39,000 is awarded to the Kickapoo Tribe in Kansas, stemming from a federal court ruling regarding atrazine contamination in public water supplies.
The class action lawsuit involved 1,085 water systems across the nation, with the court's decision handed down in October.
Kickapoo Tribal Chairman Steve Cadue says that while the payment is not a windfall to the Tribe, good use of the funds will be made by investing the monies into the Tribe's water treatment facility on the Reservation, located 5 miles west of Horton.
Earlier in January, the City of Horton also received a payment of nearly $39,000 arising from the lawsuit, which was originally filed by the City of Greenville, Illinois against the Syngenta company which uses the atrazine chemical in a weed killer it manufactures. The product is used by corn farmers to control weeds.
As part of the class action lawsuit, which has been pending in court for nearly 8 years, Syngenta agreed to pay 105-million-dollars to the plaintiffs,
