(KTNC) - The Nemaha Natural Resources District Board received an update last week on work being done in the last month to develop a ranking system to evaluate well permits.
The NRD staff will continue to test the system to determine an appropriate cutoff for approving or denying future well permits. It’s anticipated that a public hearing could be held in March or April to present information about any rules changes. Discussion can then occur about an end to the 180-day stay on construction of high capacity wells. No new high capacity wells may be constructed in the Nemaha NRD until the stay is lifted.
In other business, the NRD Board reviewed five preliminary applications for the NRD’s Urban Special Projects funding. Applications were received from the communities of Tecumseh, Panama, Firth, Johnson, and the Nebraska City Lourdes Central School.
Urban Special Projects funds are available for outdoor education areas, pond improvements, landscaping with native plants, or trails.
Four of the five applications were deemed to meet the criteria and will be allowed to proceed with completing a full application package. Applications are due by May 1st.
The board also approved the low bid, submitted by Prange Construction of Adams, for rehabilitation of Wilson Creek dam 8-H, located along Highway 2 east of Syracuse. The bid of $475,524 was only slightly above the estimated cost of the project. Federal funds will pay for 65-percent of the work.
