Snow Blankets Local Region
02/21/2013

(KNZA)--Snow is pounding the local region, with communities across the local area experiencing the heavy blowing snow, keeping the morning commute slow going.

After dawn broke, residents, from Kansas City and Topeka to Hiawatha and Seneca,  found their residences blanketed in white.

Although no injury accidents are reported, the potential for slide offs remains high, with an excavator and trailer reportedly sliding off U.S. Highway 73, 3 miles north of Hiawatha, earlier this morning.

Brown County Sheriff John Merchant says at this point he encourages those who don't have to travel to stay home.

The State of Kansas is doing what it can in handling the winter storm, with KDOT crews continuing efforts to keep roadways clear.

Later this morning, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Adjutant General Major General Lee Tafanelli will provide an update on the state's efforts in lite of the storm.

The forecast calls for snow to continue, heavy at times, through tonight, with afternoon wind gusts up to 30 mph expected.  Accumulation, through the evening, is expected up to nearly one foot in some areas, with snow occassionally falling 2 inches per hour.
