Severe Weather Seminar Planned Sunday near Wilber
(KTNC) - Between numerous snowstorms, the drought, and the approaching tornado season, organizers of a weather seminar planned for Sunday in eastern Nebraska expect good attendance. Saline County emergency management coordinator B-J Fictum (FICK-tum) says it's been an early season of strong and varying types of storms. (play audio :22)
While tornadoes can strike in any month, the tornado season doesn’t normally begin in Nebraska until the warm weather of spring arrives. Fictum says it seems as though the threat for tornado weather is arriving earlier in the year. (play audio :14)
The featured speaker at Sunday’s event is researcher and storm chaser Jon Davies, who is from the Kansas City area. (play audio :21)
The 2013 Regional Severe Weather Seminar will be held at the Saline Center, west of Wilber, and is free to attend. The event offers speakers and training on weather spotting, how to report and stay safe in severe weather. University of Nebraska climatologist Ken Dewey will give a presentation about record breaking and extreme weather of 2013, and National Weather Service Meteorologist Cathy Zapotocny will talk about storm spotters making the difference.
Nebraska will have a statewide tornado drill, Wednesday, March 27th, as part of Severe Weather Awareness Week.
