( KMZA )-The Nemaha Central USD 115 Board of Education voted during a special meeting Wednesday evening to close the B & B Junior-Senior High School at the end of the 2013-2014 school year.
The decision came on a 5-2 vote with board members Jean Placke and Dave Clements voting no.
Beginning with the 2014-2015 school year, all district students will be attending Seneca schools.
The board had also been considering using the B & B facility as a district wide middle school, which Superintendent Darrel Kohlman said was his recommendation.
However, board member Roger Hermesch said financially the district can’t keep the B & B facility open indefinitely. Several other board members agreed with him.
The board was told last week the district would see a potential savings of more than $500,000 by closing the facility.
The school district is facing a projected more than $880,000 shortfall in it's general fund budget when the consolidation financial incentives end in two years.
Highland Community College has expressed an interest in using the B & B facility as a technical education center, and the board approved a memorandum of understanding with the college Wednesday evening confirming their support for the tech center.
