( KNZA )--A new Hiawatha recreation director has been hired.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm says Lowell “ Grover” Hargrove of Hiawatha has been hired for the position, and will also serve as director of the Fisher Community Center.
Grimm says Hargrove is very well qualified and has some great ideas on how to improve the city’s recreation system as well as community center.
Hargrove currently serves as the School of Success tutor for the Hiawatha School District. He and his wife, Penny, moved to Hiawatha last year. She serves as Superintendent of the Hiawatha school district.
Following a closed door session at a special meeting Thursday morning, the Hiawatha City Commission voted to offer the position to Hargrove at a starting salary of $14.50 an hour. He will begin work in about two weeks.
Grimm says nine applications were received for the position and five candidates interviewed.
The position has been vacant since January when former director Terry Smith was transferred to the Public Works Department.
