Hiawatha to Pursue Additional Sewer Work

( KNZA )-The Hiawatha City Commission Monday evening voted to use the remaining grant and loan funds awarded to the city for phase 1 improvements to the city’s sanitary sewer system to pursue the construction of the next project phase.

The next phase, which is estimated at $450,000, includes the replacement of sewer lines in six areas.

The commission at their March 18th meeting accepted the low bid from Utility Solutions of Basehor in the amount of nearly $635,000 for the 1st phase of improvements to the sewer system. The project includes the rehabilitation of nearly 12-thousand linear feet of sewer line, some manhole rehabilitation and replacement, along with six new manholes.

The bid was more than $300,000 under the engineer’s estimate.

The city was awarded a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Kansas Department of Commerce and nearly one million loan from USDA Rural Development last year to fund the improvements.

City Administrator Lynne Ladner said she will check with the two agencies to see if the additional work can be added to the existing contract or must be bid as a separate contract.

Hiawatha is under an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to eliminate rain and ground water from entering the city's sewer system. A multiple phase plan has been developed to address the mandate.
