(KTNC) - 2012 was a “very strong” year. That was the assessment of Community Medical Center Administrator Ryan Larsen, who presented the Falls City hospital’s Annual Report to the community last Thursday.
During a half-hour Power Point presentation, Larsen highlighted the patient care and financial information from the past year, and looked ahead to the future.
Larsen began by mentioning the new, expanded CMC mission statement. (play audio :13)
Financially, hospital revenues increased to nearly $20.5 million in 2012, while expenses also increased to just over $19 million. CMC had revenue of nearly $1.6 million, which Larsen says is very good for a hospital of its size. (play audio :23)
One reason for the positive financial picture, Larsen says is the increased number of orthopedic surgeries the hospital is performing – things such as knee, hip, and shoulder replacements. (play audio :45)
Larsen says the hospital does face reimbursement cuts of 400 to 500 thousand dollars, though that won’t all be felt in the next year. He says they continue the effort to recruit new physicians, and implemented a Hospital Practitioner Program in the last year. (play audio :26)
The program is a partnership with other practitioners in town, and local doctors will remain responsible for patient care.
Larsen also highlighted new technology. A new electronic health record system was implemented last year at Family Medicine Clinic and the Humboldt Clinic. CMC will begin implementing a new electronic health record system this year, with the initial phase beginning on May 1st. (play audio :25)
Larsen also highlighted benefits the hospital provided to the community in 2012. That includes an increase in the amount of charity care. The hospital helped to subsidize additional hours for Blue Valley Behavioral Health, sold the old hospital clinic building to the city, and sold the land south of the hospital with hopes that will become a new housing development.
