(KTNC) - Adults who eat lunch at Falls City Public Schools will need a little more pocket change. After lengthy discussion Monday night, the Falls City School Board approved a motion to increase adult meal prices by 25-cents, while leaving student meal prices unchanged.
The motion also has the school district subsidize the cost of health insurance for the district lunch program during the summer months – estimated at $5,200 per month.
The Falls City School Lunch Program is self-supporting and had been paying its own insurance costs since 2004. But increased costs due to new federal requirements and higher food prices have forced many schools to increase meal prices or look for other alternatives to supplement their meal programs.
Superintendent Tim Heckenlively recommended raising the price of breakfast and lunch 10-cents for both students and adults. Board member Ed Harris suggested raising student meal prices by 10-cents in addition to the 25-cent increase in adult meal prices.
The board settled on the motion, proposed by vice president John Martin, to raise adult meal prices, leave student meal prices unchanged, and have the district absorb insurance costs for months when the lunch program doesn’t generate any income.
Current lunch prices in the Falls City School District are $2 for pre-school children, $2.55 for grades K-through-5, $2.70 for grades 6-through-8, and $2.75 for grades 9-through-12. Breakfast costs $1.60 for elementary students and $1.70 for middle and high school students. Adult meal prices are now $1.85 for breakfast and $3.15 for lunch.
In other business Monday night, the Falls City School Board approved the 2013-2014 School Year Calendar. Classes begin August 14, and the last day of the School Year is May 20, 2014.
The board approved special education contracts with ESU 4 for the next school year.
The district continues to fill vacancies for the next school year. A contract has been offered to Kelsey Hough to be a 3rd grade teacher. Hough is a 2010 Peru State College graduate and currently teaches at Omaha Westside. North School Principal Ernie Valentine has been tabbed to replace Roger Windle as the Head Wrestling Coach.
