(KNZA)--It's good news for the City of Horton, as the Brown County municipality continues a mandatory upgrade to its sewer system.
Phase one of the work is currently underway; and, once that wraps up, it will be time to begin the second phase, which includes the basic foundation for a new water treatment facility.
While a location and style of facility is not yet selected, studies regarding the plan are underway.
Phase two is expected to cost nearly 4-million dollars, but assistance to help cover the pricetag is likely.
Pat Cox, representing the engineering firm of BG Consultants, overseeing the sewer line work, recently met with officials from USDA Rural Development.
During the latest meeting of the Horton City Commission, Cox told the Commissioners the officials have informed him that 1.3 to 1.8 million dollars in grant assistance is likely for the city.
As part of the process to receive the funds, the city must authorize the design of service plans, and related documents, for phase two, and hold a public bid letting for the work.
That will allow USDA to receive additional funds from the federal government, and allow the grant funding to be allocated to the City of Horton.
The Commission approved the plan to move forward with the design of phase two, with official word of the grant funding expected sometime in the future.
