05/16/2013

(MSC News)--Local motorists are experiencing high costs at the pumps, awaking Thursday morning to see a drastic rise in many locations.

Across the region, as of late Thursday afternoon, the price per gallon for unleaded gasoline closely approached the $4.00 mark, with Hiawatha, Seneca, Sabetha, Falls City, Oskaloosa and Atchison among those reporting prices ranging from $3.90 to $3.99 a gallon.

The Triple A is reporting that the entire Upper Midwest has experienced the spike, with prices higher than the national average.

At last check, the average price in Kansas is $3.72; in Nebraska it's $3.77; and in Missouri the average cost per gallon is $3.63. The national average is $3.60.

According to the Triple A, two Chicago area oil refineries have closed for maintenance, playing into the quick jump in prices.
