(KTNC) - A state program designed to find the cheapest way to provide low-income Nebraskans with health insurance has been grossly mismanaged, according to a state audit.
State Auditor Mike Foley blames the administrator of the Health Insurance Premium Payment Program at the Department of Health and Human Services for spending millions without regard to whether it saved the tax dollars. (play audio :20 “the job properly.”)
Foley also wonders whether some people have taken advantage of the program. (play audio :14 “take a look at.”)
Foley says his auditors reviewed 70 of 661 cases in the program and discovered errors in 53 cases. (play audio :19 “more traditional Medicaid.”)
The state spent six-and-a-half million dollars over two-and-a-half years providing private health insurance to 661 Nebraskans. Foley contends many could have been covered for less cost through Medicaid.
