(KMZA)--The Nemaha County Commission has now decided to seek an exemption from the new state law that would allow guns to be carried into public buildings by people who hold concealed carry licenses, beginning July 1st.
County Attorney Brad Lippert met with the county commission Monday to revisit the issue.
Upon the recommendation of the District Court Judges, the commission voted to proceed with submitting a letter to the Kansas Attorney General seeking an exemption until January 1st.
The commission had decided last week not to seek an exemption and to abide by the law.
In other business, County Noxious Weed and Emergency Preparedness Director Todd Swart submitted his 2014 budget requests.
Swart is requesting a nearly $16,000 increase in funding for the Noxious Weed Department and the same amount of funding for Emergency Preparedness as he received this year.
David Elsbury with the Kanza Mental Health and Guidance Center met with commissioners to update them on his organization’s activities and present his 2014 budget request. Elsbury is requesting $60,187 from the county, which represents an nearly $1,200 increase from what was appropriated for 2013.
The commission will consider the budget requests when drafting the 2014 budget.
