(KTNC) - Towns and cities across Nebraska are eligible to apply for a grant program dedicated to trees. Kendall Weyers is the Sustainable Communities Coordinator with the Nebraska Forest Service and says $250,000 is available this year. (play audio :24 “large maturing trees.”)
The continued drought is putting stress on many trees across Nebraska, and Weyers says communities that need to replace trees lost to drought can apply for matching grants dedicated to planting trees.
He says we may not know the full impact of drought to the trees for quite some time. (play audio :12 “on the trees.”)
The Nebraska Forest Service has a few suggestions on tree varieties. (play audio :24 “borer disease problem.”)
The deadline to apply for the grants is October 1st and Weyers reminds communities that this is a matching program, so they will have to contribute as well. Details and application forms are available at retreenebraska@unl.edu.
