( KNZA )--Brown County residents now have a way to dispose of their old, worn, tattered and faded U.S. flags.
Representatives of the Hiawatha American Legion post received approval Monday from the Brown County Commission to place a flag disposal box in the 1st first lobby of the courthouse and it was installed Tuesday.
Steve Winter with the Hiawatha Legion said they had been getting calls from people wondering what to do with their old U.S. flags, so they borrowed the idea of the disposal box from an American Legion post in Pennsylvania.
Winter says they had a donation of a mail box from an anonymous source and had it painted—with a patriotic theme----and decided the best place to put it was in the courthouse.
Winter says the Legion plans to properly dispose of the flags during a flag retirement ceremony, tentatively set for October.
