( KNZA )--The Hiawatha Board of Education during a meeting Thursday morning approved a proposed 2013-2014 budget of $14.2 million that calls for a slight decrease in the property tax levy.
The budget contains an estimated tax rate of 52.558 mills, a .23 mill decrease over the 2012-2013 budget. The mill levy will generate nearly $4.4 million.
The board will consider adoption of the budget following a public hearing prior to their regular meeting on August 12th.
In other business, the board approved a dual sports policy for the high school.
The policy requires that students choose a primary and a secondary sport or activity. In most cases, the primary activity would be the team sport, while the secondary sport would be a more individual sport—such as cross country or golf. Only one team sport would be allowed per season.
The policy was drafted by High School Assistant Principal and Activities Director Andrew Gaddis and reviewed by the coaches for their input.
And the board approved a supplemental contract with Kim Lillie to serve as the middle school activities director for 2013-2014 with a 1.7 percent salary increase.
