Effingham Businessman Dies at 79

(KAIR)--Funeral services are planned for Tuesday for the well known Effingham businessman who died Friday.  

Gene Hegarty was 79-year-old at the time of his death at the Atchison Medicalodge. 

A one time employee of Effingham's Farmers and Merchants State Bank, owned and operated by his family, Hegarty moved into the field of insurance, and became the co-owner and operator of Hegarty Caplinger Insurance Company. 

He also served on the Kansas State Banking Board for six years and served as Kansas State Bank Commissioner in 1983 and 1984. 

Among his other roles of local leadership, Hegarty served as the treasurer for USD 377 for 45 years. 

Hegarty will be laid to rest Tuedsay in Saint Ann's Cemetery, in Effingham, following funeral services at 10:00 at Saint Ann's Catholic Church. 

The Becker Chapel in Effingham is in charge of the arrangements.
