New Stats on Nebraska Underage Drinking
(KTNC) - Nebraska is apparently bucking a national trend when it comes to lower levels of underage drinking. Nicole Carritt is the Executive Director of Project Extra Mile and says the state saw a six percent increase in underage drinking from 2007 to 2011. She says that was just one of the findings in a new policy report on underage drinking in the state. (play audio :20)
Carritt says the report also shows that in 2011, one in four Nebraska high school students reported either being a passenger in a vehicle that was driven by someone drinking or driving a vehicle while or after drinking themselves within the past 30 days. It also shows that in a ranking of states based on alcohol percentage consumed by youth, with one being the highest, Nebraska ranked 5th.
Carritt says the report includes recommendations that would help curb the problem. (play audio :18)
The University of Nebraska Medical Center's Center for Health Policy co-authored the report.
