(KNZA)--Highland Community College’s Viticulture and Enology program has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation, Advanced Technical Education branch.
The grant will allow for the addition of four new acres of vines to their existing vineyards near HCC's Wamego Center.
The focus of the grant is on mechanized equipment allowing students to get hands-on experience with farming larger scale vineyards. In addition to vines and equipment, the grant will fund an additional fulltime staff member for the department to assist with teaching, vineyard management, and other departmental activities.
The grant award, to be spread over two years, totals $200,000 and will be administered by Scott Kohl, HCC V&E program director, and lead instructor/vineyard manager Nick Martin.
