( KMZA )--Plans continue for the construction of a new Nemaha County Jail.
A kickoff meeting was held Monday for the construction of the new jail, with representatives of Treanor Architects, Nemaha County and Seneca city officials on hand.
Jeff Lane with Treanor Architects explained the steps involved in building a new jail. He estimated being ready to hand plans over to a construction company for construction of the new jail by late May or early June 2014.
The architectural firm previously drew up preliminary plans for a new 34-bed jail that would be connected to the existing law enforcement center. The cost of the facility has been estimated at $2.5 to $3.5 million.
The group reviewed the plans for the new jail addition, identifying their needs and wants. Following the review, Lane estimated that the new addition would be about 10,000 to 12,000-square-feet.
Lane also reviewed with the group a draft contract submitted by Treanor for the jail project.
The current 10-bed jail was built in 1978.
