Homestead National Monument to Host Spelling Bee
09/01/2013

(AP) - The Homestead National Monument of America is hosting an old-fashioned spelling bee, with words that were used back in 1862.

The bee will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 2 to honor the tradition from one-room schoolhouses in the 1800s. Spelling bees at the time were also viewed as social events for homesteaders.

Contestants will be divided into five categories, based on age. The bee will be held at Freeman School, unless weather conditions require moving it to the Education Center.

The bee has no entry fee, and trophies will be awarded courtesy of the Beatrice Daily Sun.

The monument is located four miles west of Beatrice.
