(KNZA)--A homecoming of sorts.
That's the sentiment expressed by New Horton Police Chief John Calhoon who begins that role of leadership Monday.
Calhoon, who served just shy of 19-years as Atchison County Sheriff, began his law enforcement career in Brown County, and was pleased when the position unexpectedly became available.
He was selected by the Horton City Commission during their September 16th meeting to replace Beau Hasenohr who resigned in August.
Calhoon currently resides in Atchison County within the 30 miles required by Horton statute, but could relocate in the future. However, he currently has a daughter attending high school in Atchison, keeping him in that location for the time being.
Calhoon says he's in the process of assessing the needs of the community, and looks to make positive adjustments in his new position, making certain that his officers present a positive presence in the city.
Prior to his selection as Police Chief, Calhoon was working for the Jackson County Sheriff's Department; and while he enjoyed that role, Calhoon says the new job brings him back home.
