(KAIR)--The Atchison fire department, along with other fire departments around the country and the National Fire Safety Council are promoting fire safety week this week, and are particularly emphasizing fire safety in the kitchen. Atchison Fire Chief Mike McDermott is advising people to pay close attention to their stove when they are cooking. This could go a long way towards preventing a fire. He says that in this fast paced, technology driven world we live in, it can be easy to become distracted while we are cooking, and this is an easy way for a fire to start.
Fires can start anywhere in the home, not just in the kitchen. McDermott goes on to say that there are a lot of different steps you can take to prevent disaster from striking. The best thing you can do is to make sure your appliances are in good working order, especially your furnace and your hot water heater.
The fire department also encourages everyone to have a working fire extinguisher in their home, along with having fresh batteries in the smoke alarms.
