(KNZA)--A former Highland man charged in connection with events surrounding a suspicious death has entered into a plea agreement.
52-year-old Morton Alfrey recently pleaded “ no contest” in Doniphan County District Court to a misdemeanor charge of unlawfully hosting minors consuming alcoholic beverages.
In exchange for the plea, felony counts of aggravated intimidation of a witness and obstruction of apprehension or prosecution were dismissed.
The Kansas Chief reports Alfrey was given a suspended jail sentence and placed on supervised probation for one year. He was also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine within 11 months.
Alfrey had originally pleaded “ not guilty” in April to the charges and a jury trial had been set for earlier this month.
The charges stem from a party that authorities say was held at Alfrey’s home the night of January 4th, which allegedly included several minors consuming alcohol. A Highland police officer responding to a call at the residence found the body of 30-year-old John Paul Jenkins.
Charges were filed against Alfrey following an investigation by the Highland Police Department and Kansas Bureau of Investigation.
