New Quarter to Feature Homestead Monument
(KTNC) -- The U-S Mint is unveiling a dozen design possibilities for the quarter to be issued next year featuring the Homestead National Monument of America, west of Beatrice.
The designs draw on the images of a plow, homesteaders, a log cabin, horse and oxen, and the monument itself. Homestead Superintendent Mark Engler says he doesn’t have one favorite design of the 12. He each design says something different about the homesteading story and it's an honor for the Homestead Monument to be included on the quarter. Engler says the new coin may boost tourism at the monument.
The U-S Mint will issue 56 different quarters featuring national parks, sites, or monuments as part of an “America the Beautiful” quarter series. Previously, Chimney Rock was featured on Nebraska’s first state quarter. The proposed 12 designs of the quarter can be seen on the monuments website. The Homestead National Monument quarter is to be released in January 2015.
