(KAIR)--The Atchison County Commission has approved a bid for the inspections of non-fracture critical bridges in the county. The inspections are required every two years. According to Commission Chair Jeff Schuele, the contract was awarded to the engineering firm Schwab-Eaton for a cost of $78 per bridge inspected, and a total amount of $13,026.
Schuele says the commission also discussed some long term plan, including the inclusion of non-required bridges in the inspection process. The commission instructed Road and Bridge Superintendent Matt Dorsom to contact Schwab-Eaton to find out if the $78 a bridge would also apply for these additional structures. He says even if these new bridges are included, it would still be less than what they spent last year for these inspections.
Schuele says the timing feels right to have those additional inspections conducted, with the possibility to be explored.
The county's fracture critical bridges, which are bridges that would completely fail if one single component of the structure failed, are being inspected by the Kansas Department of Transportation this year.
