(KTNC)--With the harvest season getting underway, the Nebraska State Patrol is encouraging drivers to exercise extra caution on the state's roadways.
State Patrol Superintendent David Sankey says it's common to see slow moving agriculture equipment on the roads – especially rural roads – at this time of year. Sankey says drivers should remember that combines, grain carts, tractors, and other farm implements typically travel at slower speeds, and operators of farm implements often have reduced visibility. He says motorists should also be alert for wildlife on the move due to the increase in activity.
Sankey says operators of agricultural implements are allowed to travel on the shoulder of roads when they're available. Farm vehicles are also required to have slow moving vehicle triangles and flashing yellow lights when they're on the road. When turning left from a road into a field or farm entrance, Sankey says drivers of those vehicles should check for vehicles attempting to pass, and he says to use seat belts if they are available.
