According to Laurie, his office has been investigating the thefts, including two reported August 21 and August 22 by the same Atchison resident who told investigators two of his vehicles had been targeted, with items, including prescription medication, cigarettes, volleyball uniforms, other clothing, and shoes, stolen.

Another County resident, a 17-year-old boy, reported on August 22 that his backpack, containing a Chromebook and textbook, were stolen from a vehicle parked in the 8000 block of Pratt Road.

On August 25, Laurie says Sheriff’s Deputies were called to the Atchison Walmart where numerous items stolen in the thefts were found in the store’s recycling bins, including items that led to Brownfield, who was already in custody, having been arrested the day before the discovery of the stolen goods. He was arrested August 24, at 11373 U.S. Highway 59, for driving while suspended, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while suspended.
Following his arrest, Brownfield was booked into the Atchison County Jail.

Laurie, in the release, says that on August 26, the day following the discovery of the stolen items in the recycling bins, a search warrant was secured for Brownfield’s vehicle that was towed following his earlier arrest. According to Laurie, the search led to the discovery of more items that had been reported stolen during the earlier crimes.

The same day that discovery was made, two additional, related crimes were reported, including the theft of a knife from a vehicle parked in the 16000 block of Parkview Street, and the theft of checks from the mailbox at Westside Veterinary Clinic, located at 17014 286th Road.

According to Laurie, all of the non-consumable property that had been stolen has now been recovered, with the reports submitted to the Atchison County Attorney’s Office for the filing of formal charges against Brownfield who, along with his latest, alleged crimes, was free on bond at the time of his arrest in connection with a July forgery case.
It’s also alleged that the handgun in Brownfield’s possession at the time of his August 24 arrest had been stolen from a vehicle in Jefferson County.
