Jackson County Crash Claims Life
01/10/2012

One dead, and one hospitalized, following an unusual vehicle crash in Jackson County Monday night.
According to Sheriff Tim Morse, a deputy, around 8:30 in the evening, spotted a green 1996 Chevy Lumina headed westbound from
U.S. Highway 75 on K-16 in the eastbound lane.
The deputy could only watch as the Lumina sideswiped an eastbound SUV, and then continued westbound, in the eastbound lane.
The deputy attempted to stop the Lumina, but couldn't catch up prior to it smashing head-on into an eastbound mini van.
The Holton Fire Department was called to the scene, with the impact of the crash forcing the need to extricate the driver of the Lumina and mini-van from the wreckage.
The driver of the Lumina is identified as 78-year-old Eric Weidman, of Onaga.  He was transported by Jackson County EMS to the Holton Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the mini van, identified as Joyce Cochren, of Holton, was transported to the Community Hospital of Onaga.
As of Monday night, she was listed in stable condition.
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Holton Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded to the scene.
The investigation into the cause of the fatal crash is apparently ongoing.
