Horton City Commissioners met Monday night; and, for a portion of the meeting, local water based attractions-Mission Lake and the municipal pool-dominated discussion.
Currently, two fish feeders, on loan from Kansas Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, are in place at the lake, providing fish with food by launching it fifty feet from the bank into the water.
In order to gain their own feeders, which would provide food from inside the lake, the City, following discussion, moved forward with applying for a grant from Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, to fund the purchase.
Horton Mayor Tim Lentz told the Commission purchasing the feeders has been an ongoing goal for enhancement of the lake's habitat(Play Audio :20 seconds)
Unanimous approval was given to making the application, with 70% of the funding to be paid through the grant, leaving the City to pay 30%, or approximately
one-thousand-32-dollars of the cost to purchase the feeders.
Following completion of that issue, Commission focus turned to the municipal pool, and the requirement to have in place a handicapped-accessible lift by the time it opens for the season.
In order to meet ADA requirements, a pool the size of Horton's must have one lift
on-site.
Commissioners examined several styles, and explored a variety of price ranges, prior to reaching a consensus on what to purchase.
Ultimately, the Commission voted unanimously to spend 4-thousand-450 dollars to acquire a lift capable of holding 400 pounds.
It will be installed at the pool prior to the seasonal opening, set to happen on Saturday, May 26th, during the Memorial Day Holiday weekend.
