Hiawatha Streetscape Project to Begin Mid-May
04/30/2012

Starting the middle of May, construction on the second phase of  Hiawatha’s downtown streetscape project will begin at the intersection of 7th and Utah Streets.
Due to the construction, the U.S. Postal Service drop box will be moved to the westbound side of Utah Street.  The box will be moved the first of May and will be relocated for about six to eight weeks.
AHRS Construction of Bern is the contractor on the nearly $822,000 project.
The Kansas Department of Transportation will pay for 70 percent of the construction cost, with the city responsible for the remainder.
The  project calls for the installation of new sidewalks, decorative lights and planters along with some utility adjustments along sections of Utah, Seventh and Sixth Streets.
The first phase of the project was completed in 2007.
