Taxpayers are being warned that new scams, using the name of the Internal Revenue Service, are beginning to circulate again.
That comes now that filing season is completed, with emails, phone calls, and faxes being received by intended victims of scammers.
IRS spokesman Michael Devine says any unexpected contact from the IRS should make a person suspicious, and no personal information, or financial details, should be given out(Play Audio :29 seconds)
According to Devine, taxpayers would already be aware if the IRS is trying to make contact with them, based on the traditional method used by the agency(Play Audio :16 seconds)
Devine says many of the scam emails are easy to spot due to misspellings, incorrect grammar or odd phrasing. However, he says some look professional and are hard to detect as fake.
No matter how good the email, fax or phone call may appear, the key is to avoid any response until confirmation of authenticity can be made.
