Hiawatha Middle School Teachers to Get New Laptops

Hiawatha Middle School teachers will be getting new laptop computers.
During a special meeting this ( Thursday ) morning, Superintendent John Severin said the school board accepted a state bid for the purchase of twenty-four new laptop computers to replace the middle school teachers existing laptops along with the equipment needed to make the high school 100 percent wireless for a total of $51,903.
In other business, a low bid was accepted from Nemaha Valley Motors in Seneca for the purchase of two new Dodge minivans for $21,250 each.
The board approved an around $17,000 grant from the state Department of Education that will allow fruits and vegetables to be served to students at the elementary school at other times during the day besides lunch and breakfast.
District Food Service Director Mary Clary applied for the grant and will be working with Elementary School Principal Tom Schmitz in setting up the program.
Following a closed-door session, the board approved several supplemental contracts and the hiring of a new 4th grade teacher.
Emily Chandler will fill a vacancy created by a late resignation at the fourth grade level. Chandler has been teaching at Haysville.
The board approved to advertise and hire additional part-time food service workers at all three attendance centers primarily due to the new federal food service requirements.
And the board voted to advertise and hire a tutor for native American students
