(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Police Department is warning local residents of a telephone scam attempted recently at a Hiawatha residence.
According to a press release from Hiawatha Police, the would-be victim received a phone call, and was then given a number to call, which is located in Jamaica.
The caller makes the claim that a large amount of money has been won, but in order to gain it, the would-be victim must dial the Jamaican phone number, likely, police say, in order for scammers to collect valuable personal information.
Hiawatha Police say if such a call is received, simply hang up, and provide no information. Additionally, the number given should not be dialed, as the Jamaican 876 area code will likely result in large phone bill charges.
Anyone who receives such a call are urged to report it to local authorities.
