( KNZA )--During a short meeting Monday evening, Hiawatha City Commissioners questioned what residents are getting for their county taxes.
Commissioner Steffen Shamburg brought up the issue as the commission considered approval of the consent agenda, which included a payment of $64,531 to Brown County District #1 for the recent chip and sealing of city streets.
More than $5,500 of the amount was for labor and equipment, with the remainder for the road oil used. The city purchases the rock used.
Shamburg, along with Commissioners Bill Collins and John Sheeran, noted Hiawatha residents are already paying county taxes.
Public Works Director Dave Grimm said he talked with County Clerk Debbie Parker and was told the second class cities in the county—Hiawatha and Horton—are charged labor, while the small cities aren’t.
Over the years, Brown County has chip and sealed the streets in Hiawatha and other communities in the county. Hiawatha no longer has the equipment to do the work.
Commissioner Collins, who was serving as acting mayor, suggested the commission meet with the county commission to discuss the issue and find out what they feel Hiawatha residents deserve for their tax dollars.
