Checks Targeted By Hiawatha Thieves
09/12/2012

(KNZA)--Unlocked vehicles, parked in Hiawatha, are targeted for burglary; and, with several check books found by thieves in the vehicles, attempts to use those bank accounts are launched(Play Audio)

That's Hiawatha Police Chief John Defore, who says it appears the culprits don't want to immediately use the actual checks; instead, they only care about the accompanying bank account information(Play Audio)

Then, when account information is verified, Defore says it's expected that the thief will begin using the checks(Play Audio)

Defore says a victim can sustain thousands of dollars in losses which could be avoided if the time is taken to simply lock vehicle doors(Play Audio)

So far, four cases of missing checks have been reported since August 30th, and investigators believe they are connected.

Defore says two suspects have developed, but no arrests have yet been made.
