Pawnee City Council Approves Budget
09/13/2012

(KTNC) - A difficult budget season came to an end Monday night in Pawnee City, as the City Council approved a 2012-2013 Fiscal Year Budget that includes cuts to all city departments.
City Clerk Tammy Stephens says council members expressed their thoughts on the budget during a public hearing preceding the vote.  (play audio  :29)
The Fire Department budget was cut 62-percent in the next fiscal year, including capital expenditures.  The cut to the Library budget was originally 21-percent, but that was negotiated down to 10.5 percent.
Following the public hearing, the council unanimously approved the budget.  The council then unanimously approved a resolution to set the property tax request at $103,004 and the proposed tax rate at 49.78 cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
In other business, the Pawnee City Council approved a recommendation to have Walker Miller fill one of two vacancies on the Airport Authority Board.  Stephens says they’re waiting for the Airport Authority to bring a second name to the council.  (play audio  :27)
The council approved a new solid waste disposal agreement with Seneca Sanitation.  They approved a payment of $55,100 to Eriksen Construction for work on the new sewer plant, and an agreement with Julie Bauman to audit the sewer plant.  The audit is required due to the amount of federal grant funds Pawnee City received for the sewer plant project.
And the Pawnee City Council approved a couple changes to the employee handbook, which are meant to save the city money.  Stephens says one is a change to the dress code.  (play audio  :31)
The other change involves eliminating benefits for part-time city employees.  (play audio  :15)
Part-time employees were receiving three sick days per year.  Eliminating the benefits will save the city $1,500 annually.
