(KNZA)--A major makeover for the City of Horton’s sewer system enters the final stage of planning, with actual work set to begin in the near future.
With the engineering firm of BG Consultants at the helm, overseeing the overall project, Horton City Commissioners Monday received an update regarding the plans to proceed. Contract documents are under review in Topeka, with the contractor, Sapulpa Digging, Incorporated, based in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, set to start construction for phase one of the project during the first half of October.
The first step of that phase will be repairs of deteriorated, isolated service taps in the city, with the contractor to begin in Northwest Horton, and then move east and south.
Following the update, the Commission approved the issuance, sale and delivery of general obligation temporary renewal and improvement notes
in the amount of around 9-point-5 million dollars. That will be used to pay off obligations for past water improvement projects in Horton while allocating nearly 900-thousand-dollars for the new project.
A map of the work will be posted inside Horton City Hall in the near future to allow the public to view where work will be conducted, once the project begins.
Horton isn’t alone in having to make the upgrades, required by the federal EPA, and mandated through an executive order from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.
The goal of the project is to reduce rain and groundwater from entering the city’s sanitary sewer system.
