National Take Back Day Saturday
09/27/2012

( KNZA )-- The Brown County Sheriff’s Department will be participating in National Take Back day Saturday.

They will be accepting unwanted, unused or expired medications from 10 to 2 at the sheriff’s office located at 709 Utah Street in Hiawatha.

Sheriff John Merchant says the purpose of the program is to eliminate any excess medications to keep them out of the hands of those unauthorized to use them, and to dispose of them in a way that is environmentally friendly.

The medication is placed in a secure box that is sealed.  After the event, the box is turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for disposal.

The prescriptions are never taken out of the box and the identifiers on the label are secure and private.

Anyone wishing to dispose of their prescriptions may do so, regardless of where they reside.

They can’t accept needle/syringes, injectable medications or illegal drugs.
