(KNZA)-- The Hiawatha City Commission has approved the establishment of a recreation committee, which will function in an oversight and advisory role to the commission.
The commission Monday evening adopted a resolution to establish the seven member committee, which was proposed by Mayor Crosby Gernon. The committee’s duties are to identify and recommend to the commission improvements in existing recreation facilities and functions sponsored by the city as well as identifying new recreation opportunities that the city should pursue.
The committee will consist of the Commissioner of Streets and Parks, who is currently Irv Schwalm, and one designee of each member of the commission. The school board will have the option of appointing the seventh member.
Mayor Gernon asked commissioners to have their designees ready for appointment to the committee at the commission’s next meeting on October 15th.
The committee will meet on the second Tuesday of each quarter or more frequently if needed and be chaired by the Streets and Parks Commissioner.
