Pet Therapy Dog to Be Used at Hiawatha Elementary School

 ( KNZA )--A pet therapy dog will be utilized at the Hiawatha Elementary School.

The Hiawatha school board gave their approval Monday evening after hearing a presentation from elementary school speech pathologist Tammy Chase.

Chase and her 4-year-old golden retriever dog, Ronny, have gone through extensive training through a non-profit organization called Domesti-PUPS.   Through the program, Ronny has been trained to be an Edu-PUP, a therapy dog who works within the school setting...( play audio )

Chase says she plans to bring Ronny to the elementary school Monday through Thursday.

The school board approved allowing Chase to use Ronny at the school for the remainder of this semester and will re-evaluate the program at the end of the semester. 

This summer, Chase said she and Ronny took part in a reading program at the Auburn, Nebraska library where children would sit and read to him...( play audio )

Domesti-PUPS, headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, was founded in November 2000 by Michelle Ashley.  Ashley serves as  executive director of the organization that provides eight different services and programs, and  has locations in Omaha, Nebraska and St. Joseph, Missouri...( play audio )

Chase said several schools in the area have utilized pet therapy dogs—including Hoyt, Sabetha and just recently Horton.
