( KNZA )- A new countywide four-tenths of a percent retailers sales tax will take effect January 1st, 2013 in Jackson County to fund road and bridge improvements.
There has been some confusion on when the tax approved by Jackson County voters in August would begin.
The original sales tax resolution approved by county commissioners last year stated it would take effect on October 1st of this year. However, the election ballot and a resolution recently approved by commissioners stated January 1st.
County Counselor Alex Morrissey told commissioners this week that at least one business began collecting the tax on October 1st.
Morrissey said she contacted the Kansas Department of Revenue and was told the tax will be effective on January 1st and the business that collected the tax will need to submit the tax collected to the Department of Revenue.
The tax, which is expected to generate about $324,000 annually, will last seven years.
