The Auburn Girls’ Cross Country team is heading to state.
The Bulldogs won the Class C District Cross Country meet, held Thursday at Boys Town. Auburn’s 26 points was good for first place. Fort Calhoun was second with 35 points and Wahoo was third with 40 points. The top three teams qualified for state.
Individually, Auburn senior Catherine Davison won the meet, finishing in 15:48.56. That was nearly 45-seconds faster than runner-up, Ronnie Brust of Wahoo, who finished in 16:32.75. Auburn junior Melissa Davison was third in 16:59.46.
Auburn had four runners place in the top 15, with junior Emily Slama 10th and sophomore Lindsey Mertes 14th.
Two runners from Syracuse also qualified for the state meet with top 15 finishes. Junior Madeline Wilkinson was 7th and sophomore Kaylee Hartman finished 15th.
On the boys’ side of the meet, Syracuse finished third to qualify as a team for the state meet. Syracuse junior Coleman Orchard won the meet in 17:23.19, about two seconds faster than runner-up Ben Everswick of Fort Calhoun. Syracuse junior Tommy Lowman was 10th.
Fort Calhoun won the team title with 17 points and Bishop Neumann edged Syracuse for second place with 45 team points. Falls City placed 8th in team standings with 145 points.
In Class D, the Johnson County Central boys ran in the district at Branched Oak Lake. JCC placed 9th with 148 points. McCool Junction, Hastings St. Cecilia, and Grand Island Central Catholic were the top three teams. Kellan Willet of Malcolm was the top individual finisher.
The State Cross Country Meet will be held at the Kearney Country Club next Friday, October 19th.
