( KNZA )-Some 4th of July traditions could fizzle out, as Jackson County is considering banning certain fireworks in the county.
County Commissioner Larry Fenske voiced concerns at Monday’s commission meeting about the sale of metal sparklers. Fenske said the commission needs to adopt regulations so the sheriff can enforce a ban on metal sparkler’s that people make into bombs.
County Emergency Management Director Pat Korte told commissioners she had met with the local fire departments and they are in agreement to ban the metal sparklers and the Chinese sky lanterns.
The commission plans to ask County Counselor Alex Morrissey to draft a resolution banning these fireworks.
In a related matter, county resident Adam Schafer met with commissioners to voice his concerns about the implementation of a $250 fee for firework stands outside city limits.
Fenske had proposed the fee, saying his main concern is liability if there is a fire due to the fireworks merchandise.
However, he withdrew his request for the fee Monday.
The commission will, for now, table the issue.
