USD 415 Considers Offering Local Drivers Ed Again

( KNZA )-The Hiawatha school district may offer drivers education locally again.

The board of education received a proposal from Grover Hargrove Monday evening to re-instate drivers education in the district.

Hargrove is the School of Success tutor in the district and for the past 25 years taught driver's education at Derby.

For the past several years, students in the Hiawatha school district have taken driver’s education through the Atchison-based Northeast Kansas Driving School. According to the schools’ Website, the cost is $400 per student for those living outside Atchison

Hargrove’s proposal would include a lower cost with a more convenient location---he would instruct the class at Hiawatha High School for a fee of $280 per student based on 30 students enrolling. His proposal also calls for a part-time paraprofessional to assist him.

Hargrove said the state reimbursement for driver’s education is expected to be $80 to $100 per student this year.

The board tabled action on the proposal until next month’s meeting. In the meantime, Superintendent Penny Hargrove directed High School Principal Alan Jeffery to survey students to determine the level of interest in the program for next summer.
