(KNZA)--The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has joined the search for a man suspected of posing as a law enforcement officer to cash fake checks.
The KBI released a list Tuesday of 23 Kansas communities and one town in Arkansas where they say 45-year-old Robert Helms has pulled the scam. They say he shows a worker a false badge in order to cash fake payroll checks and write bad checks to buy items.
The KBI says Helms most recent hits were February 1 in Scott City and Russell in western Kansas.
Helms has been seen in the local area, allegedly committing the scam at banks in Sabetha and Holton on January 20th. He is believed to have struck again locally on January 24th in Blue Rapids
Helms is described as 5'7", 190 pounds with blue eyes and short gray hair. They say he may wear round glasses and look older than his age. He has recently been seen driving a maroon, possibly Chrysler or Dodge, minivan.
Anyone who sees Helms or has information as to his whereabouts should contact their local law enforcement or the KBI a 1-800-KS-CRIME.
