(KNZA )-The Holton School District has been awarded a federal grant to help begin an after-school program for elementary school students.
The Kansas Department of Education says the district will receive more than $300,000 over a 5-year period through the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant program.
The new after school program, being called “ Aiming Cats to Excellence” , is to begin in March.
Beth Smith, who serves as principal of Holton’s two elementary schools, says the program aims to give students homework help, tutoring and other outlets for activity to build character and establish a habit of lifelong learning.
The program will be held at the Central Elementary School and Evangel United Methodist Church. It will be open to all students from kindergarten through fifth grade and enrollment is free.
