Nebraska Senate Hearing on Helmet Law
(KLZA) The Nebraska Legislature's Transportation and Telecommunication's Committee again revisited a bill that addresses the state's mandatory motorcycle helmet requirement. Senator Dave Bloomfield of South Sioux City introduced this bill that would do away with the requirement for motorcyclists and riders age 21 and over. He says Nebraska continues to lose money because riders bypass the state because of the helmet restriction. ( play audio :10 seconds )
The Committee heard from both supporters and opponents of the helmet law. David Halen is a Nebraska Motorcycle Safety Instructor and he believes the helmet law saves lives. ( play audio :07 seconds )
The bill would require those under the age of 21 to wear a helmet. All motorcyclists and passengers would be required to wear protective eyewear.
Bellevue State Senator Scott Price supported the helmet law due to medical care costs to the state if someone was injured from a motorcycle accident. He has since had a change of heart. ( play audio :11 seconds )
At Tuesday's hearing, University of Nebraska Medical Center's Dr. Joseph Stothert represented a group of trauma surgeons who did a five year survey on patients injured in motorcycle accidents. He says believes the helmet law must remain on the books. ( play audio :10 seconds)
